Planta Europa conferences

Conference participants in Valencia, Spain

Conference participants in Valencia, Spain (2004)

Planta Europa conferences are excellent opportunities to meet partners from across Europe to discuss the future of plant conservation in Europe. Participants also have the chance to discuss the developments of successful projects and new approaches for European conservation, and therefore exchange first hand information on best practices for plant conservation between European partners.

The conferences are held once every three years, discussing the future of conserving European wild plants in their natural habitats.

The last Planta Europa conference "Working together for plants - 5th Planta Europa Conference on the Conservation of Wild Plants in Europe" took place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 5th- 9th September 2007.

For information on each conference please follow the link.

5th Planta Europa Conference

4th Planta Europa Conference

4th Planta Europa Conference in 2004 in Spain. One of the major achievements of this conference was the Mid-term review of the European Plant Conservation Strategy (EPCS) developed at the previous conference. Targets and milestones of the Strategy were revised and lead organisations for each target confirmed.

3rd Planta Europa Conference

3rd Planta Europa Conference in 2001 in the Czech Republic. This conference was marked by the development of the European Plant Conservation Strategy (EPCS), a groundbreaking initiative developing the framework for plant conservation throughout Europe.

2nd Planta Europa Conference

2nd Planta Europa Conference in 1998 in Sweden. Important decisions were made at this conference regarding the future of the Planta Europa Network, including a series of resolutions and a strategic plan for the Network. Also agreed were the concept and methodology criteria for the selection of IPAs, one of the network's key projects.

1st Planta Europa Conference

1st Planta Europa Conference in 1995 in France. This 1st Planta Europa Conference was a tremendous success. It was the first ever European conference on conservation of wild plants, with delegates from 32 European countries. One of the outcomes of this conference was the decision to build up Planta Europa as a joint network for plant conservation in Europe.

Planta Europa Awards

Part of each conference is the presentation of the Planta Europa Awards recognizing excellence in plant conservation in Europe.

Planta Europa member organisations are invited to nominate suitable candidates for the Planta Europa Awards before each conference.

How to nominate

A short recommendation (not more than one A4 side) should be sent to the Planta Europa Secretariat. The Planta Europa Steering Committee will discuss nominations and make the final decision on award winners.

Jean-Paul Galland Award

The Jean-Paul Galland Award is Planta Europa's top award. This award commemorates the French botanist and conservationist Jean-Paul Galland, who was one of the founders of Planta Europa and who was killed in a plane crash on 17 July 1996 (TWA flight 800).

Each Planta Europa Conference presents one single Jean-Paul Galland Award to an individual for outstanding contribution to plant conservation.

Silver Leaf Award

The Silver Leaf Awards are presented in recognition of excellence in plant conservation in Europe.

Both awards were presented for the first time at the second Planta Europa Conference in Uppsala, Sweden, in June 1998. The nominees the Planta Europa Awards are announced on the conference pages.
